Frequently Asked Question

Q: Why would anyone want to be a sports official?

A: It's a great way to stay involved in sports once your playing eligibility is up. Be part of a close knit group that have earned the trust and respect of their peers. Make a little extra money. Stay in shape, and believe it or not, it's fun!

Q: How do I become an official?

A: Click on the "Join our team today" logo on the main page. Fill out all fields and click "Send". The assignor for each sport you are interested in will contact you. Register with the FHSAA. Attend all mandatory meetings. Take the rules test. That's it.

Q: What type of test do we take?

A: The FHSAA has all officials take a 100 question, mostly true/false with a few multiple choice, proctored individual exam.

Q: Do I need to pass the test to officiate?

A: No. You must take the test to avoid a fine, but you only need to pass the test to work varsity level. You are eligible to officiate middle school, freshmen and junior varsity games regardless of your test score.

Q: Do I need experience?

A: Experience helps, but you have to start somewhere, and we have games available for all experience levels.

Q: Will I be trained?

A: There will be local and state clinics, where you will have the opportunity to learn and improve through class room and on court sessions. Individuals who make a commitment to learn and apply what they learn on the court will see the results.

Q: Why wouldn't everyone want to be a sports official?

A: We just don't know.
